4 Easy Side Hustles for Mid-Life Women – And How to Get Started
You’re not lost. You’re becoming.
If you’re standing in the middle of your life wondering, “Is this it?” — I want to tell you something:
It’s not too late.
It’s not selfish to want more.
It’s smart.
You don’t need to blow up your life to build something meaningful. You just need to start small — and start listening to your curiosity.
This is what I did. I didn’t go viral. I didn’t strike it rich, at least not yet! But I taught myself how to build a side hustle from scratch. Actually, I taught myself how to build three. None of them required a business degree or a trust fund. Just Instagram, trial and error, and a little belief in the next version of myself.
Here are four creative, low-cost, and truly easy side hustles I’ve personally explored — and why they might be your next brave thing too.

1. Portrait Photography
What it looks like: You take family photos, senior portraits, couples sessions, or even local events.
Why it works:
This side hustle started with a passion for taking travel photos and capturing memories of our daughter. Before I turned 50, I began photographing my daughter’s soccer team and became the team photographer. By the time she was a junior in high school, I was taking portraits of her and her friends. That experience led to a Facebook page and social media presence where I shared my photography and began offering sessions to others (visit me @tipsoomemories).
Word spread through our soccer network and local community, and it turned into a side hustle that helped pay for a 10-day trip to Europe for my daughter and me. That’s the beauty of starting small — it can grow into something meaningful, memorable, and income-generating.
How to start:
- Take photos of family, friends, and community events
- Build a basic portfolio on Facebook or Instagram
- Offer mini sessions and seasonal deals to get traction
- Network through local schools, sports teams, or community groups
📌 Key mindset shift: You don’t need to be “professional” to start — just present.
2. Selling Your Creative Work Online
What it looks like: You take a passion (photography, art, design, writing) and turn it into a product sold on Etsy or a similar platform.
Why it works:
I set my sights on creating an Etsy store to sell my photography — wall art from travel and nature scenes. But I quickly learned that Etsy is a niche platform, similar to Instagram. You need a clear, focused concept to stand out.
There’s a lot that goes into making it work — from pricing to listing creation, to promotion and shipping. I’ll admit: I haven’t put the time in that Etsy requires. But I’ve learned that if you do have a unique idea and are willing to be consistent, it’s still one of the most easy side hustles to set up.
I once heard a story of a former teacher who took broken crayons from her classroom, melted them into multicolored crayon blocks, and built an Etsy shop around that simple idea. It eventually made enough for her to leave her full-time job. That’s the kind of creativity this platform rewards.
How to start:
- Choose a focused product (digital downloads, prints, crafts)
- Open an Etsy shop with clear branding
- Learn Etsy SEO and take clean product photos
- Be ready to test, tweak, and promote consistently
📌 Key mindset shift: Etsy rewards the niche, not the generic. Start with something that feels uniquely you.
Fun Idea: I used ChatGPT to help make “Joke Books.” I am now a published author with aI help of a series of books that poke fun at social media, and one for my passion of wine. You can pick one, or them all, up on Amazon! Be sure and also check out My Wine Walk for more about travel and wine.

3. Becoming an Influencer (Yes, Really)
What it looks like: You build a following around something you love — and create content that helps, inspires, or entertains others.
Why it works:
My passion for wine and travel inspired me to start My Wine Walk on Instagram. I started small — posting photos of winery visits and sharing thoughts and experiences. Over time, my page grew to over 3,400 followers and led to collaborations with local wineries. In a little over a year, I received over $1,000 worth of wine products. Give me a follow on Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok (@mywinewalk).
Influencer work isn’t about luck — it’s about consistency. I post 2–3 times per week, stay engaged with my audience, and continue learning what content resonates. For someone who’s spent most of her life behind the camera, being in front of it has been a real growth edge. But God often pushes us out of our comfort zones for a reason — and now, at over 50, I’m just having fun with it.
How to start:
- Choose a topic you’re passionate about
- Start on one platform (I recommend Instagram for lifestyle or travel and TikTok for quick growth)
- Create a strong brand profile and bio
- Decide on your content style — stories, reels, carousels, photos
- Post regularly and learn as you go
📌 Key mindset shift: You don’t need to go viral. You need to be visible — and consistent.
This is one of the most easy side hustles to try if you love sharing and storytelling online.

4. Starting a Blog or Lifestyle Brand
What it looks like: You create a platform to write, teach, or inspire others — on your terms.
Why it works:
You’re reading this on my lifestyle blog — She Said Next. It was born from a desire to reflect, reconnect, and help other women in midlife navigate what’s next. I’ve rekindled old friendships, built new ones, and with more time in this season of life, I want to share what I’ve learned. I also write a travel and wine blog on My Wine Walk.
Setting up a blog takes commitment, but it’s deeply rewarding. You can eventually monetize it through affiliate links, digital products, or services. I started on Blogger, but ended up switching to WordPress using Bluehost (which I highly recommend) and the Kadence theme.
There’s a lot more to learn — like Pinterest marketing and building an email list (like my newsletter Still Becoming — sign up if you haven’t!). But those are all things I’ll be writing about soon.
How to start:
Read my article on top tips to starting a stress-free blog!
- Choose a blog name and buy a domain (Bluehost is a great place to start)
- Set up WordPress and use a clean, flexible theme like Kadence
- Pick 3–4 core topics you want to write about
- Connect it to a social media profile (Instagram or Pinterest)
- Start writing and share each post with your network
📌 Key mindset shift: Blogging is a long game — but it gives you total creative control.
Blogging is one of the most fulfilling and easy side hustles to start from home — especially when you build it around your voice and values.
Start With a Hosting Platform That’s Beginner-Friendly (I Recommend Bluehost)
Before you even log into WordPress, you need a home for your blog. That’s where hosting comes in.
In addition, I used and recommend Bluehost because:
- It’s built for beginners—no tech degree required.
- It connects to WordPress in just one click.
- You get a free domain name (like YourBlogName.com).
- The dashboard is easy to understand and the help chat actually helps.
The best part – Signing up through my affiliate link gets your first year hosting at $1.99/month! Don’t wait!
🖱️ Click here to sign up with Bluehost and get started with a discount through my affiliate link. I only share tools I’ve personally used—and Bluehost made it simple. I did a lot of research from other bloggers and this is the top rated option. I also recommend using the Kadence theme, which I found to be the top rated theme across the blogging community. Finally, Blue Host really is the best WordPress hosting platform.
Final Word: Your Next Chapter Doesn’t Need Permission
Maybe no one around you is doing this. Maybe they’re telling you it’s too late. Maybe a part of you believes them.
But the truth?
You don’t owe anyone your old self.
Start small. Follow your curiosity. Make space for your creativity. These easy side hustles aren’t about hustle at all — they’re about building something that reflects you.
So if you’re standing at the edge of what’s next…
